THE ULTIMATE TASSIE SURF ROAD TRIP

Two of my best mates, Tom and Flynn and I recently took a loaded 79 Series Dual Cab Toyota Land Cruiser on an 18-day surf road trip through Tassie’s east coast. With sunshine everyday, consistent solid swells and good winds throughout, it really was the ultimate surf trip.

We arrived at Devonport off the spirit of Tassie and stayed at Penguin for the night, before heading straight to the Bay of Fires, just north of St Helens for two days of epic surfing and camping.

We stayed at the iconic Sloop Reef where there is free camping along the beach and 2WD access - you could get there in a Hyundai Getz if you really wanted to. The water was crystal clear - perfect for diving and spearfishing! And not to mention the sick waves.

From the Bay, we cruised through to Bicheno where we surfed some sick waves and spotted some penguins. This spot is apparently known for its penguin sightings.
Freycinet National Park, Tasmania, Australia
Further down the coast, we took a two hour 4WD track to a secluded beach within the Freycinet National Park. Here, we spent the night fishing and surfing the most gorgeous spread of beach. There was not another person in sight the entire time we were there, which made the experience all the more spectacular.

Next, we headed to Port Arthur where we camped out in the dunes and explored The Neck which led us down to the iconic Roaring Beach where we found some epic waves.

Still off the coast of Port Arthur, we checked out Eagle Hawk and it’s Remarkable Caves. They were sick. We climbed down a cliff, paddled out through the cave and ripped some waves out the front of the cave.

To end the trip, we travelled down to Hobart and then back up to middle - straight through the guts and past the well-known Great Lake where we saw some pretty amazing mountain ranges! This took us back to Devonport to board the Tassie Spirit.

All in all, Tassie was a dream. The coastal land down under is all peninsular, it comes out and comes in; so you’ll always find somewhere to surf. YEW!
